Winkhaus Composite Door Lock Repair in St Nicholas Manor, Cramlington

If your composite or uPVC door is becoming difficult to lock, it is best not to ignore it.
A stiff handle, a door that catches or locking points that do not retract properly can all be
early signs that the multipoint locking mechanism is under excessive strain.

On Saturday morning, Locksmith Kev attended a property in
St Nicholas Manor, Cramlington, close to
Manor Walks Shopping Centre, where the customer was experiencing these exact problems.

The problem with the composite door

The customer had noticed that the composite door was becoming increasingly difficult to open and close.
The locking bolts on the multipoint strip were not retracting fully, which caused the door to catch and
stick against the frame.

After inspecting the door and removing the locking mechanism, we identified several related faults:

  • A failed Winkhaus multipoint locking mechanism
  • A dropped door caused by hinge movement
  • Misaligned keeps in the door frame
  • Locking bolts that were not retracting fully

The dropped door and incorrectly aligned keeps had placed additional pressure on the multipoint lock.
Each time the handle was operated, the locking points were being forced against the frame instead of
moving freely.

Over time, this extra resistance can damage the gearbox or other internal parts of the multipoint mechanism.

Repairing the Winkhaus multipoint lock

Rather than recommending an unnecessary replacement door, we carried out a full lock and alignment repair.

The work included:

  • Removing the failed Winkhaus multipoint locking mechanism
  • Replacing the faulty locking strip and gearbox
  • Adjusting the composite door hinges
  • Realigning the door within the frame
  • Adjusting the keeps to match the locking points
  • Testing the handle, key, bolts and full locking operation

Once the repair and adjustments were completed, the door opened, closed and locked smoothly again.
The bolts were able to retract fully without catching against the frame.

Signs your composite door multipoint lock may be failing

Multipoint locks often give warning signs before they fail completely. Contacting a locksmith early
can help prevent you from becoming locked in or locked out.

Common warning signs include:

  • The handle feels stiff or requires excessive force
  • The handle does not return to its normal position
  • The key is becoming difficult to turn
  • The door needs lifting or pushing before it will lock
  • The hooks or bolts do not fully retract
  • The door catches against the frame when opening or closing
  • The door locks smoothly while open but becomes stiff when closed

If the lock works correctly while the door is open but becomes difficult when the door is closed,
the problem is often caused by door alignment or incorrectly positioned keeps.

Continuing to force the handle can damage the gearbox and turn a minor adjustment into a complete
multipoint lock replacement.

What causes a composite door to drop?

Composite doors are heavy and can gradually move out of alignment. Even a small amount of movement
can prevent the multipoint locking points from lining up correctly with the keeps.

Common causes include:

  • Hinge movement or wear
  • Loose hinge fixings
  • Seasonal expansion and contraction
  • Movement within the door frame
  • Repeatedly forcing a stiff door
  • Poor installation or previous adjustment

Correctly adjusting both the door and the keeps is important. Replacing the lock without correcting
the alignment could place the new mechanism under the same strain.
