Securing a Newcastle Landmark: Rosie’s Bar on Stowell Street

Today, I had the privilege of being chosen to carry out lock changes at Rosie’s Bar on Stowell Street, Newcastle — a venue with real history in the city and a familiar meeting point for Newcastle United supporters before and after match days.

Rosie’s has long been part of the atmosphere around Newcastle city centre. It is one of those places people recognise, remember and talk about. Whether it is football supporters meeting before heading to the match, visitors enjoying the city, or regulars who know the venue well, Rosie’s has earned its place in the area over the years.

The bar is now under new management and is preparing for its official reopening at 11am on Friday 26 June 2026.

As part of the preparations, we were asked to attend and change the locks to help secure the building ready for reopening.

Lock changes completed before reopening

When a business changes hands, one of the most important jobs is making sure the new owners have proper control over who can access the premises.

Over time, keys can end up with previous staff, contractors, suppliers, cleaners, former managers and other people connected to the building. Even when everyone has acted honestly, it is impossible to know exactly how many keys may have been cut or where they are now.

For Rosie’s Bar, the work included:

• Changing external deadlocks
• Replacing fire-door external access locks
• Supplying new keys for the new management
• Helping ensure old keys no longer gave access
• Checking the doors remained secure and practical for daily use

This gives the new management a clean start and means access to the building can be properly controlled from day one.

Commercial lock changes need more thought than a simple lock swap

On a commercial building, especially a bar, restaurant or hospitality venue, lock changes are not just about fitting a new lock and walking away.

The doors need to be secure, but they also need to work properly for staff, deliveries, opening and closing routines, emergency access and daily use. Fire doors and external access doors also need particular care, because security must never be allowed to compromise safe escape arrangements.
